Postharvest quality management in chains of fruit and vegetables in Cambodia

Fruit and vegetables are one of the lifeblood of the economy of Cambodia which is mainly agricultural. Annual production is estimated at 800,000 metric tons, ranking next to cereals. In recent years, fruit and vegetable production has increased dramatically due to the introduction of improved varieties and production techniques as well as increased market demand and entry of modern market outlets, in particular supermarkets. Together with increasing domestic production is the increasing market supply of imported fruit and vegetables mainly from Thailand and Vietnam. To improve production and marketing efficiencies and increase profitability and market competitiveness of local produce, quality management in supply chains needs to be improved and keep up with current trends. This paper describes the initiatives improving the quality management systems for oranges as a model system for fruit and tomato as a model system for vegetables.
