Technical barriers to trade in global citrus markets: A case study of China-EU citrus trade

There has been arising use of technical barriers as restrictions to trade in global agricultural trade contexts, which could be most typified by citrus trade. In this analysis, technical barriers to trade in global citrus markets are profiled. To evaluate the implications of barriers for citrus trade prospect, as a case study, we give a broad overview of technical barriers in China-EU citrus trade and examine the trade impacts of the technical barriers. The results show that, inevitably, trade barriers have negative impacts on citrus trade. The trade barriers affect citrus trade flows. Specifically, citrus exported to the countries with relatively low technical requirements will increase when citrus exporters are face with technical barriers. Moreover, the exporters may bear additional costs in meeting such mandatory standards and their competitiveness could be diminished, and the importers may also suffer welfare loss.
