Natural occurrence of mycotoxins in different spices in Egypt.

A total of 120 samples of 24 types of spices were collected in Assiut Governorate, Egypt and examined for mycotoxins by TLC.  Aflatoxins were found in 16 samples of anise, black pepper, caraway, black cumin, fennel, peppermint, coriander and marjoram at concentrations in the range 8-35mg/kg.  Sterigmatocystin was found in ten samples of red pepper, caraway, cumin and jarjoram in the range 10-23mg/kg, and citrinin was found in two samples of black cumin at 8 and 12mg/kg.  Ochratoxin A and zearalenone were not detected.
