The microbiological quality of chewable tobacco mixes from India, traditionally known as “gutkha”, was studied. Analysis of 15 samples revealed high bacterial and fungal counts. AFB1, B2 and G2 were found to be present in all the samples. Gamma radiation at 3 kGy resulted in the sterilisation for gutkha.
