Characterization of Fusarium culmorum isolates by mycotoxin production and aggressiveness to winter wheat.

Twenty seven isolates of Fusarium culmorum were investigated for their aggressiveness on ears and leaves of wheat as well as for mycotoxin production. Aggressiveness as measured by 1000-grain weight reduction was not correlated to disease severity on wheat leaves. The more aggressive isolates produced mainly DON while the less aggressive isolates produced mainly nivalenol (NIV), further supporting involvement of DON in pathogenicity. Sixteen of 27 isolates produced mainly NIV and 10 produced mainly DON. In vivo mean NIV and DON contents ranged from 0.95 to 55.2 mg/kg  and 2.9 to 74.3 mg/kg, respectively. ZEA could only be detected in vitro, with all but 2 strains producing detectable levels.
