Fumonisins and neural tube defects in South Texas.

This paper reports on a neural tube defect (NTD) case-control study of environmental (including fumonisin exposure), nutritonal and medical risk factors along the Texas-Mexico border by the Texas Department of Health. The border is a high prevalence area with an NTD rats of 13.4 per 10,000 live births. Some fumonisin exposure is likely since the population ingests corn based foodstuffs on a daily basis and as a greater proportion of their diet compared with other areas. A possible mechanisms for the role of fumonisin in NTD is discussed.
