Extraction and separation of the bright – greenish – yellow fluorescent material from aflatoxigenic Aspergillus spp. Infected cotton lint by HPLC –UV/FL.

The bright greenish yellow flurescence (BGYF) material associated with aflatoxin contamination on cotton lint was isolated using various in vitro chemical and in vivo natural BGYF reaction products. BGYF material was obtained from reactions involving kojic acid (KA) and H2O2 , KA, peroxidase and H2O2, detached cotton locules inoculated with an aflatoxigenic Aspergillus flavus spore suspension, and live developing cotton bells inoculated with aflatoxigenic A.flavus. In all methods used to from the BGYF compound, both in vivo and in vitro, only one compound with specific chromatographic characteristics was produced. The product is likely an oxidized form of KA.
