Use of Film Thickness for Modified Atmosphere Packaging to Prolong Storage Life of Rambutan cv. 'Rong-Rien'

The use of polymeric films with varying film thickness to extend storage life of rambutan was studied. Rambutan were packed in 0.01, 0.04, and 0.08 mm thick polyethylene (PE) bags at 13°C with three replications for each PE film. Modified atmospheres (MA) were developed in the sealed polyfilm bags. 0.01 mm PE bags developed MA of 15-16% O 2 , 2-3% CO 2 and 95-100 % RH. 0.04 mm PE bags developed MA of 3-5% O2 , 10-11 % CO2 and 95-100%RH. 0.08 mm PE bag developed MA of 1-2% O2, 15-16%CO 2 and 95-100% RH. The film packages reduced moisture loss compared to the control. Modified atmosphere packaging delayed discoloration of spintern and increased the storage life of rambutan. The discoloration of spintern of rambutan was not affected by varying film thickness. It was found that correlated with relative humidity rather than with elevated CO2 levels and decreased O2 levels within package. Rambutan stored in 0.01 and 0.04 mm. Thick PE bags had a storage life of 18 days, while the control fruits had the storage life of 12 days.
